Over the last couple years, tablets’ rise in popularity and an increase of applications and functions available have made decision making for consumers a tad bit difficult. Those in the market for a new tablet have another worthy name to add to the list. Taiwan-based computer company Asus has been quietly making quality tablets, including their popular Eee Pad Transformer. They have upped the ante by recently unveiling their TF300 Transformer tablet. With the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system courtesy of Android, count on all of the features you’ve come to expect from Android-driven tablets (i.e., more customization options and integrated screenshot captures). The TF300 also features some new additions, such as Face Unlock, which utilizes facial recognition to access the tablet, and Android Beam, a new short-range file-sharing system between compatible Android devices.

In December of 2011 Asus released the successor to its popular Transformer Android tablet, dubbed the Transformer Prime. Sporting the first quad core processor for any tablet, Asus’s incredibly popular keyboard dock and Google Android’s latest operating system called Ice Cream Sandwich, there was a lot I was looking forward to with this device. As a full time photographer that frequently travels the globe, I have been looking for a tablet or laptop to meet my needs. While I own a 2011 11″ Apple Mac Book Air, I typically do not do any serious editing on the road. While I do thoroughly enjoy the MBA, it has a pretty horrible battery life (less then 5 hours), which doesn’t cut it for me. After using an iPad & iPad 2 plus various other Android tablets, I was still left wanting more functionality and practicality. While the Transformer Prime is certainly not perfect, it has been the closest I have found to a true travel laptop replacement. I received the 32gb Transformer Prime in the grey amethyst color as well as the matching keyboard dock.

Tablet Vs Laptop

Tablet Vs Laptop

The question for many people isn't which tablet they should buy, but whether to buy a tablet or a laptop. Tablets are capable of many tasks that were previously only possible with a laptop or PC. But that doesn’t necessarily mean laptops are obsolete. There are still limitations to what you can do with a tablet. The obvious difference is that all laptops have a physical keyboard. Typing long documents is easier and more comfortable on real keys, rather than tapping away at a screen for extended periods. However, it's possible to buy keyboards for tablets, too. You can use a Bluetooth keyboard with the iPad (Scosche, for example, produces the KeyPad P2 shown below), and some Android tablets such as the Asus Transformer have an optional keyboard with a second battery built in. Tablets can't compete with laptops on storage, though. Most laptops have hard disks with capacities around ten times larger than a tablet's memory. With a tablet, you'll have to be choosy about which photos, videos, music and documents you store locally. The rest has to be stored online, or on a PC or laptop.

Android 4.0 Tablet

Android 4.0 Tablet

The only hitch there: There isn't a single version of Android. At Google's last I/O developer conference, the company unveiled Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), which adds so many valuable improvements that it's our Editors' Choice for mobile operating systems. It's the best Android yet, especially with improvements in the 4.2 update, and you can get it on Google's own Nexus tablets, but it's not yet widely available on other tablets. Android has notorious problems with timely OS updates. Still, even if you don't have the latest OS iteration—or an Android variation à la Amazon Kindle Fire or Barnes & Noble Nook—Android continues to be the most configurable tablet operating system you’ll find. It's a master multitasker with an excellent notification system, and top-notch integration with Google services like Gmail, Google Chat, and Google Maps. There still aren't as many tablet-specific apps as you'll find for the iPad, but slowly, that's changing.

Android tablets had a rocky start, but as Google continues to refine its mobile operating system, we're finally seeing a steady flow of high-quality Android tablets. And that's a good thing, since they provide viable alternatives to theApple iPad, which has dominated the tablet market since its first release in early 2010. One of the major benefits of Android over the iPad, is that instead of a single hardware choice, you can access the OS on a number of tablets in different sizes with varied designs.
