Security Studies
Syracuse University and the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism (INSCT) offer interdisciplinary as well as discipline specific security related courses and educational programs which address important questions of law and policy related national and international security and counterterrorism. Students interested in pursuing a career in the security field may engage in advanced coursework toward specialty certificates in security and counterterrorism studies.Although national security and terrorism issues have taken center stage in our nation and institutions of higher education since the September 11th terrorist attacks, INSCT Director Professor William Banks and his colleagues have long researched and lectured about security issues. Based on his experience teaching such courses as National Security Law, Counter Terrorism and the Law, and the interdisciplinary course Perspectives on Terrorism, Professor Banks traces the evolution of the study of national security law in his article Teaching and Learning About Terrorism. This article was published in the 2005 Journal of Legal Education.
